Getting Ready for Fishing This Summer

Posted by Van on May 20, 2009

There is just something that I love about summer.  It could be the fact that I finally get to go outside and escape being cooped up in our home (which happens because of winter), or it could be that I just love fishing.

Alright, it is because of fishing…

Seriously, I have been fishing since I was a child and it is one of my favorite pastimes.  There is just something magical about sitting out in your boat all day and enjoying the peace and quiet that nature has to offer - it definitely beats the stressful lifestyle I have thanks to my job.

Before I take the boat out for the maiden voyage this year, I need to get some boat parts to fix my outboard motor.  After a “little accident” last summer, it is not working well at all.

Thankfully there is a dealer here in town that sells Evinrude parts at a reasonable price.  Hopefully they will have what I need to get my baby working again.  It is my only option as I tried to get my wife to agree that I need a new boat, but that was quickly shot down, so my boat needs to last a few years longer.

Dad’s new idea

Posted by PA on February 20, 2009

My dad loves getting new ideas.  I think he’s a little bored with his life, and that’s where it’s coming from, but he almost never follows through with the ideas.  I love that he has the idea, but I just wish he’d really invest himself and have confidence in his own ideas.  Anyway, his new big plan is to install wind turbines to the top of his house to use wind power to power his home.  He lives by the ocean, so he’d have some pretty good wind kicking up, and I think it would be kind of cool, but he doesn’t seem to be following through.  He also wants to install California solar systems to harness solar electric power (by using solar power) for the house.

I think it’s amazing that he wants to use all these great eco-friendly options to power his house; I just wish he’d commit to one or all of them.  I don’t think the environment is something you should just loosely commit to or think about doing; I mean, he doesn’t even recycle his cans.  I know he’s just doing it to save on heating bills (fine by me), but he should get on it!

Had to Find One

Posted by Jerry on February 15, 2009

used forklifts for saleI own a small trucking company.  Most of what we do is LTL business across the southern states.  I have two warehouse transfer points along I-10 that are hopping most days of the week to keep the trucks rolling.  We have been open about 25 years, and most of our equipment is original, including the forklifts.  The problem is that one of them passed away last month, and it was not a good time for it to go.

Since we had not bought one in many years, we got sticker shock when we looked at new ones.  Our old ones were mostly in good shape, and I didn’t see a need for a new one, just another used forklift truck.  My warehouse manager said that he heard you could find them on the internet, so he did a search for forklift Texas, and came up with a few locations where we could look.

We sent a truck to pick it up, and were amazed at the condition it was in for the price we paid.  Our operation does not work if we can’t load and unload trucks.  Our trucks have to keep moving, and can’t get stopped because of equipment.  In this economy, used is the way to go.

What is a small business to do?

Posted by PA on December 9, 2008

It seems as if more and more small business owners are taking on the “Woe is me” attitude these days. Instead of going out and making it happen, they are waiting for someone to hand them something. They are complaining and they are just hoping that someone will listen and give them some advice. That advice is here for small business owners. You need step up to the plate and quit feeling sorry for yourselves. You need to do something about where your business is heading.

There is a way to make sure that your inventory is used the right away. It is called inventory control software and it will change the way you view your business. There is a way to keep up with your books that is much more effective and efficient than the old, antiquated methods that you are using. An IT asset tracking software will take that completely out of your hands. There is a way of speeding up your checkout process by going with a new laser barcode scanner.

The point is that there are answers out there for you. You just have to be willing to drop your fears and trust them a little bit. It might be difficult at first, but it will pay off in the end.

The Building of a Building Machine

Posted by Jerry on November 21, 2008

It is possible to build your own lathe, but even before reading further on the topic, it is almost self-evident that this is going to take a lot of time and energy. You can add motors and variable speed drives along with all the other parts that go into a lathe, but there’s no guarantee it’s going to have the production capacity of some of the more workhorse industrial multi spindle machines. Resting on a flat bed, the headstock has the motor and the bearings. Attached to it is the spindle, which spins as the motor spins and can have connected to it many different kinds of attachments. Don’t forget your tool rest and tailstock and you’ve got yourself a lathe.

As if the wonder of making turned parts isn’t intriguing enough, there are a multitude of accessories that can go along with any lathe. Faceplates and chucks can be added, as can mandrels and collets. A lathe dog is not a pet for your machine but helps when turning between two centers. Know specifically what you want to make, otherwise you will be shopping around forever for lathe machine attachments. There are many of them.

Should You Buy or Rent Your Business Equipment?

Posted by KS on October 29, 2008

Most businesses require some kind of equipment in order to perform their duties.  Business equipment can run quite high, and is therefore one of the biggest categories of business expenses — especially for startups.

So the question is, should you buy or rent your business equipment?  Your decision should depend on how expensive the equipment is and how often you use it.

For example, if you own a landscaping business, you will probably find that you frequently need to be able to screen topsoil on site.  If you have to rent one to perform many of your contracted jobs, the expense of renting is going to quickly add up, and you lose the advantage of paying a small amount to just rent a machine once and be done with it.  Therefore owning a topsoil screen would be well worth the initial expense of making a big purchase.

On the other hand, if you do primarily small gardening and maintenance, you probably only need to rent gravel screeners very occasionally, when you have that odd job where a client wants some gravel work done.  In that case, you are better off just renting the portable screener once, returning it when you are done, and not having to worry about maintenance, upkeep, and storage for a big, expensive piece of equipment.

Deciding whether to lease or own a piece of equipment is not always an easy choice, but it can be made easier if you look carefully at your projected usage of the equipment and weight the financial differences between purchasing or renting the equipment.
